Book Promoting and Selling Tips

Selling your book:
  • Contact your local independent bookstores to see if they will buy a few, or take a few copies on consignment. Ask for a book signing event, perhaps offer to pay for an add.
  • Try your local Books-A-Million, Borders etc for book signing events.  Many have local author departments.
  • Check out the local gift shops, cafe's, or retail establishments you regularly frequent. Offer to do a signing event and advertise for it.
  • Schedule local poetry readings, sell your books after your reading.
  • Check with your local libraries, many have local author programs, you can schedule readings and sell books.

promote your book

  • Work with your local newspaper. Perhaps they will write an article about you. Approach local free weekly papers. If you have reviews for your book, send them.
  • Distribute and post flyers at your school, church, grocery store, work, etc. Make sure you leave contact information and schedules for readings.
  • Try your hand at press releases to local newspapers, newsletters & bookshops. If your local paper has a book review section, see if you can send a copy for review.
  • If you have a local radio station, talk to them about interviews. Advertising appearances.
  • Participate in open mike poetry reading nights.
  • Do you have a local writer's association?  More than likely there is. Find the group and join, they are great sources for places to go to and may have good contacts for you.

promote your book online:

  • Create a simple website.  Keep current schedules posted, a poem or two and, of course information on how to buy your book.  Online purchasing is easy to set up, check out paypal for quick inexpensive 'bookstore' help.
  • Put your web address in your email signature.  Send on 'e' cards to all your friends.
  • Check out online sites, create lots of links if you can.
  • Keep your website current - add new information as often as possible, post a poem or two and change them at least once a week.
